Organizing Photos with Flickr

3. Deleting Photos from Flickr

To delete photos, go to the “Your photos” page (Figure 1). Click the Delete link beneath the unloved image, and Flickr shows a box asking, “Are you sure?” If the answer is yes, then click OK. The photo completely disappears from Flickr. It’s no longer available to any of the photo sets or groups you added it to.

4. Flickr’s Organizr

The Organizr gives you a different Web-based view of your Flickr photo collection. You still use your Web browser to work with your photos, but Organizr gives you one big advantageit puts all your tools in one convenient window (Figure 3). When you’re traveling, Organizr makes your browser window act more like the photo organizing program you use at home.

Figure 3. With Organizr, you can perform many Flickr housekeeping chores on a single screen. Tabs on the right side of the screen give you access to sets (your collections) and groups (topic-based gatherings where you browse through others’ pictures). The links at the top return you to Flickr’s standard Web pages.

To open the Organizr window, go to www.flickr.com/photos/organize, or click the Organize link at the top of any Flickr page.

Here’s a tour of Organizr’s tabs:

  • Browse. This panel looks reassuringly familiar if you’ve used Windows’ Thumbnails view or a program like, say, Picasa. It shows you thumbnail (miniature) versions of all the photos in your stream, that you can drag to rearrange. The timeline at the panel’s bottom is the most interesting feature. By dragging the slider, you can limit the date range that Organizr shows you at a time, which comes in handy as your Flickr collection swells. You can organize your photo window by the date you took the photos, or the date you uploaded them. If there’s more than one page worth of thumbnails in that range, then click the arrows and page numbers (1, 2, and so on) at lower right.
  • Search. Clicking this tab reveals a panel where you can find photos by the tags you’ve applied to them or by any words you’ve typed in the photo’s title or description. To have Organizr look for words, type them in the text box at the top of the panel, and then click Search. Any tags you’ve created appear below the text box. Turn on the checkboxes next to the tags you’re interested in, and then click the lower Search button. Organizr displays thumbnails of the search results in the middle of the screen.
  • Your sets. This panel displays thumbnails of your Flickr sets. You can drag to rearrange them, edit their names, and so on. Click a set’s thumbnail to reveal its contents in the Browse panel.

Note: When you have a Flickr Pro account, Organizr is the easiest way to organize all the new sets you can create. Just click the Create a New Set button at the bottom of the “Your sets” panel.

  • Your groups. This panel displays a list of any Flickr groups you’ve created or joined.

Note: Organizr operates using Flash, which is the most popular technology for displaying animated graphics on the Web. Most browser programs come equipped to show Flash graphics, but if you need to download or update yours, then go to www.macromedia.com/downloads.
